Skye's Garden
In the middle of our school, there is a very special area called Skye’s Garden. Skye Martin was a very special girl who attended our school. She was a very pretty and popular pupil who had lots of friends. Skye was always full of fun and everyone liked her. Sadly, when in Primary 2, Skye became ill and had to go into hospital. She didn’t get any better and died on 4th April 2004. She was only 6 years old. Everyone in the school was sad when this happened. We couldn’t believe that we would never see our friend again.

We all missed Skye and wanted to have a special place to remember her. We decided to have a garden dedicated to her memory. Mrs McCaffrey and her Primary 5 class, including Skye’s older sister Helen, made this their special project. One of the dads, Mr Kennedy, helped us to design the garden. Pupils, parents, teachers, school staff and volunteers all joined in to prepare the ground, plant and decorate the area. Donations came from pupils and staff and Mr Gilchrist, from GP Landscapes, also helped us. It was hard work but we managed it. We transformed an unused area into a beautiful garden.

We held a special garden party to commemorate the official opening of the garden. This was a lovely day. The garden was opened by our local MSP, Karen Gillen. Mr Gilchrist, our councillor Mr Reilly, Skye’s parents, sisters and Granddad and all the people and pupils who had made it possible were all there.

The garden is a quiet, peaceful place in our school, where you can sit on Skye’s special bench and think about all the happy days we spent with her. If you are coming to visit our school, please take time to come and see Skye’s Garden.

We also need volunteers to help with the maintenance and weeding of the garden. A big thanks to the parents who already help us maintain the garden - click the photo below to see our volunteers hard at work!
