SUFFOLK
|
Suffolk was the destination of 2005's tour. Saturday morning was spent at Snape Maltings, the site developed by local composer Benjamin Britten for the Aldeburgh Festival. The choir tested the concert hall's acoustics with a rendition of Bruckner's Locus Iste before leaving for lunch at nearby Aldeburgh. (Some opted for a pub lunch washed down by the local Adnam's ale, whilst others were tempted by fish and chips on the seafront!) The evening's performance of Britten's St Nicolas was performed in Aldeburgh Church, where Britten himself conducted the first performance of the piece in 1948. His grave can be found in the peaceful churchyard. |

The picturesque seaside town of Southwold was the first stop on Sunday. Another impromptu performance of Locus Iste at St Edmund's Church and a bite to eat, then off to Blythburgh Church, where the Black Shuck, a hell dog, was said to have terrorised the parishioners one stormy Sunday morning in 1577. The evening concert of Mozart's Requiem was well received by the unexpectedly large audience.
The tour was brought to a fitting close on Monday with choral evensong in the magnificent Lincoln Cathedral. |
