KRAKOW
|
At the start of June 2002 the Singers went to Krakow, Poland for a short concert tour. We very much enjoyed visiting this fascinating historic city, singing in two very different and beautiful churches, shopping, and tasting the sights, sounds, and of course wonderful Polish food and drink. |

St Mary's Church, Rynek Square

Apart from giving concerts we enjoyed exploring the wonderful old town, wandering the cobbled streets, sitting at pavement cafes surrounding the magnificent Rynek Square drinking the excellent Polish Okocim or Zywiec beers and tasting the local delicacies such as pierogi, stuffed potato dumplings, and wonderful crepes suzette, apple pie and a delicious dark hot chocolate drink.
We explored the Wawel Castle and Cathedral, went down a 700 year old salt mine, and visited Kazimierz, the old Jewish quarter with museums, synagogues, cemeteries and markets, where we ate in atmospheric restaurants such as Noah's Ark and Ariel and listened to superb live Klezmer music.
Krakow is great for shopping; silver and amber jewellery, clothes, leather and decorative wooden gifts are particularly good and reasonably priced.

ZAKOPANE

Tatra mountain view
|
Some of the choir stayed on after the tour to travel south to Zakopane in the Tatra mountains on the Polish-Slovakian border. A very picturesque ski and summer resort town full of delightful wooden architecture and surrounded by magnificent snowtopped mountains. Cable cars and a funicular take visitors up the mountains and the scenery is spectacular. Shopping is excellent, especially for amber, and even cheaper than in Krakow.
